Nutrition During the Whelp Process
".... During whelp there are two
important factors to check for -- ensure that dam is
hydrated and that her calcium levels are kept at a
good level.
With large breed dogs that normally
have large litters, long whelp times may need some
assistance to keep the dam whelping the puppies in a
timely manner. There are some things, we as
breeders can do, to help the dam along and avoid an
expensive trip to the vets."
How to Store and Serve Food
"....Preparing
the food for the dogs.
Dedicate some feeding containers to the dog’s
food preparation.
For example, if you order your chicken mince in
2 kg blocks, put it in a container large enough to
hold it and then defrost it over a two-day period in
the refrigerator.
Put frozen bones in the fridge overnight to
partially defrost.
Never leave raw foods sitting out especially in
summer.
Feed the foods direct from the fridge to the dogs.
Remember to weigh the foods.
Put the dog’s dish on a digital kitchen scale
and zero the scale’s weight,
and then
add the food."
